Solar engineers in East Africasince 2011

We have built solar and battery systems for businesses in East Africa. Factories, hospitals, schools and lodges across Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania run on power we designed, built and still look after.

Where we come from

We are engineers first, and it shows.

Franz Sistemich started Equator Solar in 2011, back when almost nobody in Uganda was doing solar engineering properly for business. Fifteen years later we have more than 300 systems running in the field and a team of 22 people who look after them.

Because we are engineers, we start by measuring how much power your site actually uses and then build the whole system around that number. Whether it is solar on its own, solar with batteries, a hybrid with your generator or fully off-grid, it comes with the monitoring and controls that keep it performing for the next 25 years.

We work at commercial and industrial scale, from about 20 kW up to 2 MW, so we are not the people to call for a panel on the roof at home. Our senior engineers have been doing this long enough to care about the details nobody sees, like cable sizing, earthing and the fault logs.

We pair German engineering discipline with a team that knows how things actually work here, and that mix is why factories, hospitals, schools and international organisations hand us their power and then stop thinking about it.

Every project, no exceptions

What every client gets

Whether your system is 20 kW or 2 MW, these four things stay the same.

Tier 1 technology that holds its value

We use components from makers such as Jinko, Huawei, BYD, Sungrow and SMA, who will still be around to honour the warranty, in a plant built to run for 25 years.

We build it as one system

We engineer the solar, batteries, generator, monitoring and controls as one plant, with one design and one company answering for all of it.

Service that does not stop at handover

You deal with a dedicated service team and real engineers on the phone, people who know your system because they built it.

Advice before you spend anything

We measure how much power you use and work out the numbers before we quote, and sometimes that means telling you to spend less.

Our partners

We do not do it alone

Behind every system we build there are people we trust. Two German companies bring engineering depth and an international network to our work in Uganda. Finance partners let our clients go solar without paying for it upfront. German associations, a university and companies across the region have brought us into projects we could not have reached on our own, and the equipment comes from manufacturers whose products we have installed and serviced for years.

German partners

German engineering behind our work

NEXIRA

Kassel, Germany

Shareholder and strategic partner

NEXIRA GmbH in Kassel is a shareholder of Equator Solar Systems Ltd. and stays actively involved in the company’s development, with ongoing strategic and business support. It is also our international network partner and connects us with contacts in procurement, sourcing, new clients and project finance. NEXIRA was the operational partner behind our project with the German Energy Agency (dena), funded under the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy’s Export Initiative Energy. Together we delivered the solar systems at Lubaga, Naggalama and Buluba hospitals, the 200 kWp plant at Jesa Farm Dairy and our first cross-border project, a research site in Kisumu, Kenya.

renergy consulting

Ettenheim, Germany

German energy-efficiency expertise

renergy are energy-efficiency specialists who advise German industrial companies on their energy strategy. They run certified energy management and know how to get more out of every unit of energy a business uses, and that experience goes straight into our own engineering. Together we worked out renewable energy and efficiency plans for seven tea factories and the energy model for Uganda’s eco industrial parks, both for GIZ.

Finance partners

Solar without the upfront investment

When a client wants solar without the upfront investment, we bring in a finance partner. The partner owns the system and the client pays for the power, while we engineer, build and maintain it. Clients who want to own their system can finance the purchase through a bank.

Sawa Energy

Uganda and Rwanda

Sawa Energy

Sawa Energy finances solar and storage for businesses in Uganda and Rwanda, and the client pays for the power instead of buying the plant. We have built ten Sawa systems since 2023, from a 58 kWp rooftop in Namanve to the 500 kWp plant at Kyamuhunga Tea, and we look after them in operation.

GRIPS Energy

East Africa

GRIPS Energy

GRIPS Energy finances, builds and runs solar plants for industrial companies in East Africa, and sells the power at a fixed rate below the grid tariff. We work with GRIPS as engineering and installation partner when an industrial client wants clean power without tying up capital.

Stanbic Bank Uganda

Kampala, Uganda

Stanbic Bank Uganda

Stanbic Bank Uganda is one of the largest banks in the country. Clients who prefer to own their solar system outright can finance the purchase through Stanbic, and we provide the technical basis the bank needs to assess the project.

Project and research partners

Partners who brought us into their projects

Some of our best work came through partners who brought us into their projects: German associations that support hospitals and schools, a university running research labs across East Africa, and companies that subcontract us for their own clients.

Partnerschaft Gesunde Welt e.V.

Germany

Partnerschaft Gesunde Welt e.V.

Partnerschaft Gesunde Welt is an association of the Klinikverbund Südwest hospital group in Germany, and it supports partner hospitals in Uganda. Since 2016 we have built solar for Lubaga, Naggalama and Buluba hospitals with them, and most recently a dedicated backup system for Naggalama’s new CT scanner.

Lubaga Hospital

Kampala, Uganda

Lubaga Hospital

Lubaga Hospital is one of Kampala’s oldest mission hospitals and was our first hospital project in 2016. Since then we have extended its solar system, added battery backup for critical loads and powered a wastewater research pilot on its grounds, and we still look after the plant today.

National Water and Sewerage Corporation

Uganda

National Water and Sewerage Corporation

NWSC runs water supply and sewerage for Uganda’s towns and cities. We first assessed which of its sites suit solar, and then worked out a national roadmap for moving its boreholes onto solar, together with the Dutch water operator VEI.

Amasiko e.V.

Germany

Amasiko e.V.

Amasiko e.V. is an association from Germany that supports the Amasiko Green School and the community of Hamukaaka in southwest Uganda. With them we built an off-grid solar system for the school’s classrooms, lighting and ICT, trained a local technician to look after it, and later extended the system to the guest house.

Hochschule Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe, Germany

Hochschule Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences runs applied research on water and energy in East Africa. Since 2018 we have built its solar research installations, starting with a fisheries site in Kisumu that combined solar, battery, biogas and diesel, and later the Living Labs in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Solar23

Ulm, Germany

Solar23

Solar23 is a solar company from Ulm, Germany, that supplies solar systems for health facilities across Africa. For the UNICEF programme with the Ugandan Ministry of Health, Solar23 supplied the equipment and we installed the systems at 250 health centres, and we now run their maintenance.

Roam

Nairobi, Kenya

Roam

Roam is a Kenyan company that builds electric motorcycles and buses and runs solar charging hubs. Roam brought us in as subcontractor for the solar and battery system at Asilia’s new safari lodge near Bwindi, which we delivered to Roam’s material and interface standard.

AfricroozE

Uganda and Germany

AfricroozE

AfricroozE builds solar-powered electric bicycles for African roads, with a German parent company and its own team in Uganda. We built a solar charging station in Bugiri so their e-bikes charge on sunshine instead of the grid.

VEI

Netherlands

VEI

VEI is the international arm of the Dutch water utilities. With VEI we worked out a national roadmap for NWSC to move its boreholes onto solar.

RENAC and UIBFS

Berlin, Germany and Kampala, Uganda

RENAC and UIBFS

RENAC, the Renewables Academy in Berlin, trains bankers and engineers on renewable energy finance. Together with the Uganda Institute of Banking and Financial Services, we turned the solar plant at Aquarius Kigo into a live case study for bankers learning to finance solar.
